Why Social Ties Matter in Shocks	Eventbrite	11/18/2021		Many observers continue to think about readiness and response to disasters in terms of individual preparation (e.g. kits) or government activity (massive seawalls and early warning systems). But a growing body of evidence shows that it is our social ties - the people that we interact with - that help us survive and thrive during shocks. In this seminar moderated by Johns Hopkins SAIS interim Dean Dr. Kent Calder, speaker Dr. Daniel Aldrich will discuss how investing in civic and social infrastructure can better prepare societies for shocks to come. A Conversation with the Govenor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike	Youtube	10/29/2021		Join SAIS Interim Dean Kent E. Calder for a pre-recorded conversation with the Governor of Tokyo, Japan, Yuriko Koike. The Honorable Koike was elected Governor of Tokyo on July 31, 2016, becoming the frst Japanese woman in the post. Koike previously served as a member of Japan’s House of Representatives and was formerly the Minister of the Environment and Minister of State for Okinawa and Northern Territories Affairs in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Jun’ichiro Koizumi. Koike notably supports economic liberalism, promotes administrative and budgetary reform, and insists on the advancement of the status of women in the working world. Seminar with Amb. Gomez Camacho	Youtube	09/30/2021		The fellows and Ambassador Gómez Camacho had a dialogue on several interesting topics, including the role of diplomats in the modern age, perceptions of immigration policy, and the effect that international organizations have in pressuring domestic institutions to change. The ambassador put forth that during the age of instantaneous communications, a diplomat’s role no longer focuses on bureaucratic connection between governments. Instead, modern diplomacy concentrates on connecting with the society to which one serves and strengthening transnational grassroots and business organizations.	Amb. "Introduction to Research Methods and Report Writing"	Eventbrite	09/20/2021		Dr. Brooks invites Reischauer Center visiting scholars and other interested parties to join him in a seminar on the challenges of researching and writing an academic report.
