Japanese Post-Proficiency Language Instructor
Toshiko Calder is a professorial lecturer and an associate of the Reischeur Center. Since 2013, she has been teaching post-proficiency policy Japanese, a course designed to enhance professional level Japanese language education combined with in-depth understanding of civil-society policy issues in Japan. Before joining SAIS, Prof. Calder had taught Japanese at Princeton University and other institutions. She has been a longtime promoter of Japanese-language education for overseas Japanese youth, and was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, Silver Rays by the Japanese government for her contribution.
Toshiko Calder holds an MA in Japanese Pedagogy from Columbia University’s Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, as well as an MA in Education Policy from George Washington University’s Graduate School of Education and Human Development. Before moving to the US, she served as an editor and journalist at Shinchosha, one of Tokyo’s most prominent publishing companies,
