This is a profound tragedy, both for Japan and for the world. Prime Minister Abe was a realist, a nationalist, and a man of vision, however controversial. He made major contributions to the US-Japan alliance, and showed a remarkable ability to connect with both Republican and Democratic leaders in the US. He deepened a foundation of trust across the Pacific, both through personal diplomacy and astute speechmaking, on which Prime Minister Kishida can build. We are honored at his association, and that of his family, with SAIS across the years.
