On January 13th, 2023, Johns Hopkins University SAIS and the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies had the honor of hosting Prime Minister Fumio Kishida for a major policy address.
Prime Minister Kishida’s visit was historic: the first visit of a sitting Japanese Prime Minister to SAIS in 40 years. A prominent group was assembled to hear him: an audience of over 300 people, including the Japanese Foreign Minister, National Security Advisor, and an official delegation of 23 ranking Japanese officials, including nearly ten members of the Japanese National Diet. The Special Assistant to President Biden for Indo-Pacific Affairs and other senior US government officials, as well as foreign diplomats, were also in attendance, together with many SAIS students and friends of Johns Hopkins University. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies researchers, faculty, and affiliated students all played key roles in making this important event possible.
Prime Minister Kishida’s visit was substantive as well as symbolic. He delivered his first major policy speech in the United States at SAIS. In this 28 minute address, he reaffirmed the US-Japan alliance, and suggested concrete pathways for future bilateral cooperation. He also stressed the importance of the Global South, Japan’s activie engagement with developing as well as industrial nations, and of the great opportunities for multilateral diplomacy during 2023, beginning with the Hiroshima G-7 summit.
