The Bay of Bengal: In Political and Economic Transformation Conference

The Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies hosted “The Bay of Bengal:  In Political and Economic Transformation Conference” on April 19th. In this conference Dr. Yasuyuki Sawada, Chief Economist of the Asian Development Bank – ADB spoke about the current economic outlook, regional cooperation, and infrastructure investments in the Bay of Bengal. Dr. Kent Calder Director of Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies and Asia Programs at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies | SAIS discussed the global geoeconomic context in Sea Lanes.

Panelists Reischauer Senior Fellow Daniel Bob, Inle Advisory Group Founder and Principal Erin Murphy, and Johns Hopkins SAIS Asia Programs PhD. Candidate Anand Mishra debated the implications and impact the current political and economic changes will have on foreign policy in the region.

Finally, Keiichiro Nakazawa, Director for South Asian Affairs at Japan International Cooperation Agency relayed the emerging economic and security challenges for those in the Bay of Bengal and discussed these concerns in greater detail with Professor Joshua White of Johns Hopkins SAIS Asia Programs.
