On April 21st, 2022, Reischauer Center Visiting Scholar Fumitoshi Watahiki (TEPCO) and Reischauer Center Senior Advisor Dr. William Brooks discussed the reasons why the global balance in renewable energy and fossil fuels consumption is affecting economic and political relations between energy importing nations, such as Japan, and energy exporters. Mr. Watahiki projected Japan’s energy mix in 2030 and its impact on trade relations with key partners – particularly Saudi Arabia, Australia, and Qatar.
He concluded by examining alternative energy resources, such as battery storage. Overall, he emphasized the significance of energy as a lifeline for Japan and its importance for world affairs.
