Strategic Neglect on Both Sides: Korea-Japan Relations in 2018

On November, 13th 2018 the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies hosted a discussion with Dr. Cheol Hee Park of Seoul National University to discuss Korean-Japan relations.

Titled Strategic Neglect on Both Sides: Korea-Japan Relations in 2018, Dr. Park reviewed Japanese and Korean government and public reactions to issues such as Korea’s Supreme Court decision regarding Japan’s forced laborers in Korea during World War II, comfort women, and trilateral cooperation. Examining the administrations of Moon Jae-in and Shinzo Abe, Dr. Park characterized Korean and Japanese foreign policy towards one another as “strategic neglect.” Dr. Park fielded questions from the attendees about the role of the Korean Supreme Court in foreign policy, the changes in Moon Jae-in’s platform over time, and the future of trilateral cooperation.

Dr. Park received a Ph.D. from Columbia University in the City of New York and is currently a visiting senior fellow at the Atlantic Council.
