The Nikkei Asia 2022 Mt. Fuji Dialogue
On October 22, Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies Director Kent Calder moderated a roundtable discussion with leading Japanese policymakers as part of the Nikkei Asia 2022 Mt. Fuji Dialogue in Tokyo.
Panelists included Mr. Onodera Itsunori, Former Minister of Defense; Mr. Sato Masahisa, Former State Minister of Foreign Affairs; Mr. Yamashita Takashi, Former Minister of Justice; and Ms. Matsukawa Rui, Former Parliamentary Secretary of Defense. The panelists discussed Japan’s response to its evolving security environment, how the war in Ukraine is shifting the locus and proactivity of Japanese policymaking, and how best to build upon emerging public support for an updated Japanese security policy/posture. Panelists stressed the need to expand the Japanese defense budget and cooperate closely with allies in securing stability in the Asia Pacific.
