On April 29th, Reischauer Center Visiting Scholar, Mr. Yuta Tonegawa, discussed current trends of zero emission energy, the Biden administration’s energy policy, and the current situation of Japan’s energy policy.
The potential for introducing renewable energy in the US is great and is likely to be further promoted by future policies of the Biden administration. However, in order to achieve this outcome, Mr. Tonegawa said that it is crucial to prioritize further investments in R&D and technology development to better distribute energy, in addition to making more solar panels and wind turbines. He also stated that nuclear energy is critical in order to achieve zero carbon emissions in 2050. However, it has recently become a bipartisan issue and thus major policy changes may not occur soon. For Japan, clearly defining common issues and challenges, as well as steadily deepening the Japan-US cooperation are important because Japan itself has scarce natural resources.
