2018 Annual China Global Think Tank Forum

Dr. Kent Calder, Director of the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies | SAIS spoke at the 2018 Annual China Global Think Tank Forum about the growing trade war between the United States and China.

He stated that the trade war is not actually about trade, and while the trade deficit must be addressed, the real challenge is the increasingly competitive relationship between American and Chinese firms in high-tech areas such as AI and 5G.

Addtionally, with regard to the US “change through engagement” policy toward China, the US should focus on understanding the Chinese systems rather than aiming to change it.
