Development and Challenges of the Japan-U.S. Relationship & the Role and Vision of Higher Education

On Tuesday, April 30, 2019, the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies and Dr. Kent Calder, the Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs and International Research Cooperation at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies | SAIS hosted Dr. Aiji Tanaka, President of Waseda University, to present a Reischauer Center Memorial Lecture titled “Development and Challenges of the Japan-U.S. Relationship and the Role and Vision of Higher Education.”

In his lecture, he gave an overview of Waseda University’s history and the university’s impact on academic exchange between the U.S. and Japan. He went into detail about Waseda University’s relationship with Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins’ academic influence on Waseda.

He went on to describe his personal experience as a graduate Waseda University’s class of 1975 and the various roles he held before eventually becoming President of Waseda University. Finally, he expounded upon his desire for Waseda University, as a premier academic institution in Japan, to be the home of future global leaders with international experience.
