On September 19th, 2018 Dr. Kent Calder, Professor Gary Talarico and the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies hosted Ms. Nobuko Kobayashi, a partner at A.T. Kearney K.K. in Tokyo, to give a presentation on the status of Abenomics, as well as structural reforms in Japan’s corporate governance and labor market.
Ms. Kobayashi explained that most large Japanese firms now have outside directors who are more likely to actively pursue shareholder interests. She argued that although Japan’s female labor force rate now exceeds America’s, its high gender wage gap persists due to a bifurcated labor market in which women are often relegated to temporary low-skill positions.
Ms. Kobayashi also discussed strategies foreign investors can use to enter the Japanese mergers and acquisitions market.
