Not a Black Box: Knowing North Korea through Applied History.

On Thursday, October 4, 2018, Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies hosted a discussion with Dr. James Person, Professor of Korea Studies at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, SAIS, titled Not a Black Box: Knowing North Korea through Applied History.

Dr. Person demonstrated methods of how we can look at North Korea through historical records such as diplomatic cables with their former allies and satellite imagery, and the milestones in Sino-DPRK relations. Dr. Person brought years of DPRK analytical experience to the discussion, where he formerly served as founding Director of the Hyundai Motor-Korea Foundation Center for Korean History and Public Policy at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars and was founding Coordinator of the Wilson Center’s North Korea International Documentation Project.
