On Friday May 10, 2019, the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies hosted a conference on public diplomacy in the Asia-Pacific, titled “Advancing U.S.-Japan Relations in a Changing Washington.”
The first panel, titled “Classical Public Diplomacy: Patterns of Success and Failure,” featured Dr. William Brooks, a former State Department specialist on Japan and a current professor at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies | SAIS as moderator, Dr. Craig Hayden, author of “Diplomatic Convergence: Information Technologies & US Public Diplomacy” and Sr Adjunct Professorial Lecturer at American University School of International Service, Ms. Margot Carrington, recent Minister-Counselor for Public Affairs at アメリカ大使館 U.S. Embassy Tokyo, and Dr. Charles Morrison, former President of the East-West Center.
Following, Dr. Tomohiko Taniguchi, Special Advisor to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Cabinet and Professor at Keio University’s Graduate School of System, Design, and Management delivered the keynote speech, which covered China’s increasing influence in Southeast Asia, Japan’s recent successes in public diplomacy, as well as the increasing influence of second generation Chinese and Korean immigrants in Japan.
The last panel, titled “Emerging Challenges in a Changing Washington,” featured Dr. Kent Calder, Vice Dean for International Research Cooperation at Johns Hopkins SAIS as moderator, Mr. Ryan B. Shaffer, President of the Japan-America Society of Washington DC (JASWDC), Mr. Siddartha Ghose, author of “Ties that Bind: Quantifying China’s Public Diplomacy,” and Associate Director at AidData, and Mr. Daniel Bob, Former Legislative Assistant to the U.S. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Senator William Roth.
