In Memoriam: Dr. Nathaniel Thayer

It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Professor Nathaniel Bowman Thayer. Professor Thayer was Director of Japan Studies at SAIS for many years, a senior member of US Embassy Tokyo, and an advisor to the Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies. He was also a recipient of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon– one of six former and current Order recipients affiliated with the Reischauer Center– the highest number of any comparable institution in the United States. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends. He will be missed dearly by all of those who knew him on both sides of the Pacific.
