Mongolia’s Foreign Policy: Navigating a Changing World

On Tuesday April 16, 2019 the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies hosted Dr. Alicia Campi, President of the Mongolia Society and Adjunct Professor at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies | SAIS, who introduced her new book, “Mongolia’s Foreign Policy.”

The book explores the history of Mongolia and the country’s relationship with its regional neighbors including India, the Koreas, Japan, the U.S., China, and Russia. During her presentation, Dr. Campi emphasized that Mongolia’s strategy of economic and social development is connected to its historical experience, and that there is still distrust of FDI amongst Mongolians especially outside of urban areas. She also discussed the various forms of partnerships the state has established, whether through trilateral relationships with China and Russia or engaging with “third neighbors” including EU countries, Japan, the ROK, Turkey, Iran, and others.

Her speech was followed by questions from the audience that ranged on topics from suggestions for US policy toward Mongolia, the influence of demographic changes on domestic politics, and how Mongolia presents itself as a neutral “bridge” for facilitating discussions in both regional and international arenas.
