Dr. Kent E Calder recently published an op-ed in Kyodo News about the importance of home and family for President-elect Joe Biden.
Dr. Calder provided personal anecdotes about repeatedly seeing Mr. Biden take the train home to Delaware from Washington D.C., a four hour round trip commute on Amtrak. Despite Biden’s political ascent to the Senate and subsequent tenure as vice president, Dr. Calder notes in the article that his modest childhood upbringing, loss of his wife and two children, and Catholic faith have grounded Biden and further connected him to his home and to his roots.
According to Dr. Calder, this sort of strong attachment to “home” is unusual for Americans and closer linked to Japanese notions of “furusato”.
