On Thursday, February 21, 2019, recently retired Foreign Service Officer Margot Carrington was invited by the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies to give a presentation in Dr. William Brooks’ Public Diplomacy and U.S.-Japan Cooperation course at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies | SAIS.
Ms. Carrington spoke of her many years of experience working as a foreign officer in Japan and detailed her role in organizing former President Obama’s visit to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.
She spoke at length about how her duties as a Public Diplomacy officer in Japan influenced her belief in the importance of a strong U.S.-Japan alliance. Questions fielded from students concerned the lasting effects of former President Obama’s visit to Hiroshima and the future of the U.S-Japan alliance.
