On Friday, May 3, 2019, the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies hosted Dr. Sylvia Schwaag Serger, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Professor of Research Politics at Lund University, at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies | SAIS.
In her presentation, which was based on a report she recently delivered to the Swedish government on Sino-Swedish relations in science, technology and higher education, Dr. Serger analyzed the difference between the U.S.’ and Europe’s reaction to China’s growing technological prowess and ambitions. She focused particularly on the Sweden’s “smart cooperation” response to China’s rise in science in tech, which included greater collaboration on trade, sustainability and innovation, and science diplomacy. She went on to speak more generally about Europe’s changing stance towards China, and raised the possibility of China reorienting itself away from the U.S. and towards Europe.
Questions from the audience sought greater detail regarding the concept of “smart cooperation” and touched upon how ethics might get in the way of cooperation between Sweden and China.
