Rethinking Geopolitics: Geography as an Aid to Statecraft

Dr. Jaehan Park, Postdoctoral Scholar at John Hopkins SAIS, joined the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies Seminar Series to discuss his latest paper on geopolitics, which explores its intellectual history—the theories and concepts introduced by Mahan, Mackinder, and Spykman—and its overall influence and relevance to IR scholarship.

During his presentation, Dr. Park explored the relationship between “geo” and “politics,” and the differing interpretations of “geopolitics” adopted by contemporary scholars. Dr. Park went on to argue that geography is sometimes overlooked or incorrectly employed in geopolitical analysis. Taking into account the relativity of geography, he argued that human factors can offer new insights into state behavior and IR scholarship more broadly.

Following his talk, Dr. Park took questions from the audience regarding his presentation.
