On April 26th, the Reischauer Center held a student-faculty dialogue, “The Ukraine Conflict and East Asia’s Future.”
Panelists discussed the potential implications of the war for the Eurasian continent as well as for Asia, and how East and Southeast Asia are responding to the war. Dr. Kent Calder explained the potential for how the invasion of Ukraine may impact the world order through the strengthening of the West and the restructuring of energy and commodity flows. Dr. Jacobo Pepe enumerated the broader implications of the Ukraine war on the continent and how the war will likely alter trends in the trilateral relationship between Europe, Russia, and China.
Participating students, Anu Anwar, Shahad Turkistani, and Connor O’Brian, and Policy Research Fellow, Lam Tran, spoke about the impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine from various regional perspectives. Such challenges discussed regarding the conflict include the struggles of unified action or energy diversification for regions around the globe like South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.
