On May 1, 2019, the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies hosted Dr. Kent E. Calder, Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs and International Research Cooperation at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies | SAIS, for the launch his new book Super Continent: The Logic of Eurasian Integration, published April 2019 by Stanford University Press.
In his talk on Super Continent, Dr. Calder emphasized the death of distance and the need to understand geography under new contexts of Eurasian geopolitical shifts. He outlined various logics of integration on the Eurasian landmass, including a shorter China-Europe land route, the instability of India’s border countries, and the physical centrality of China. The book proposes that the Belt and Road Initiative model evokes a new world order of “distributive regionalism,” one which concentrates benefits and diffuses costs. After his presentation, Dr. Calder fielded questions covering the future of Northeast Asia, debt traps, and the growing Chinese influence.
