On Friday, June 14th, 2019, Dr. Kent Calder published an opinion piece in Kyodo News titled, “The global logic of a Tokyo-Tehran tete-a-tete.” In his column, he describes Japan’s contributions to global stability and Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s presence in global affairs.
Dr. Calder focuses, particularly, on rising tensions surrounding the Iran conflict. He discusses the Trump administration’s approach to the issue of escalating tensions with Iran and how this may open an opportunity for Japan to play the role of mediator. With the G-20 summit to be held in Osaka on the 28th and 29th of June, Japan is in the spotlight and will have a unique opportunity to comment on major global issues of war and peace.
