The Japan Times: Odessa and Putin’s imperial dream

Dr. Kent Calder, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies | SAIS and Director of the Reischauer Center, recently published an article with The Japan Times titled “Odessa and Putin’s imperial dream.”

In it, Dr. Calder argues that both strategic interests and the desire to restore the Soviet imperialist empire drive Putin’s battle for Odessa. The fate of Odessa, Dr. Calder argues, will have broader implications for the future of the war in Ukraine and on international sanctions against Russia even following the war. Dr. Calder maintains that how the battle for Odessa plays out will have spillover effects that will impact food, energy, and other commodity prices.
