On Wednesday, September 12, 2018 Dr. Bill Brooks, Senior Advisor to the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies moderated a panel on Japan’s Security, Political Reform, and International Trade by Dr. Saya Kiba, Associate Professor at Doshisha University, Dr. Akai Ohi, Adjunct Lecturer at 東京大学 | UTokyo, and Dr. Takemasa Sekine, Associate Professor at 名古屋商科大学 / NUCB.
Dr. Saya Kiba’s presentation, entitled “Japan’s Engagement in Meeting Security Needs in Southeast Asia,” focused on Japan’s assistance to Southeast Asia conducted under the Ministry of Defense and Japan Self-Defense Forces, providing the militaries in the Asia-Pacific region with training and education in the field of non-traditional security.
Dr. Akai Ohi’s presentation, entitled “Politics of Reform: A Guide to Understanding Contemporary Japanese Political Confrontation,” elaborated on the two types of conservatism in Japan confronting each other politically and how this conflict impacts Shinzo Abe’s government.
Dr. Takemasa Sekine’s presentation, entitled “Japan’s Leadership in International Trade Rule-Making,” covered the decreasing importance of the US-Japan trade relationship for Japan in light of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).
