The fourth episode of the Asia in Washington podcast by the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies is now available. Policy Research Fellow Yasmin Yoon spoke with Dr. Ho-Fung Hung, Johns Hopkins University’s Henry M. and Elizabeth P. Wiesenfeld Professor in Political Economy & Department of Sociology Chair. Dr. Hung discussed Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protests and the underlying socioeconomic issues mobilizing Hong Kong citizens.
This episode was originally recorded in November 2019 following the city’s local elections and the introduction of the extradition bill, which will provide listeners with a refresher on how the city’s current situation came about. The episode’s postscript by Vivian Chen addresses the new security bill and potential consequences for Hong Kong’s future.
