On May 5th, Reischauer Center Visiting Scholar Mr. Yasuhiro Goto from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, presented his analysis on the evacuation measures the Japanese government implemented to protect residents following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in 2011.
From 2012 to 2014, Mr. Goto was in charge of planning and deciding policies related to radiation protection measures for residents impacted by the accident. During his presentation, Mr. Goto examined the mid- to long-term radiation protection measures taken by the Japanese government for the health of the residents along with the history of the policy decisions made and the subsequent results, highlighting the key strategies that worked and what could also be improved upon to prepare for potential disasters in the future.
