Pivoting Grand Strategy: Explaining the Geographic Orientation of Rising Po

On Feb. 21st, Dr. Jaehan Park, a Postdoctoral Associate at the Albritton Center for Grand Strategy at Texas A&M University and a Nonresident Fellow at the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), presented to members of the SAIS community on his current research which looks at how great powers determine their geographic orientation.

He argued that states expand where they easily can, not always where they would like to. He provided historical examples between 1895-1905, looking at Japan, the Soviet Union, and the United States of America specifically. Following his presentation, he answered questions ranging from digital age to BRI. We look forward to hearing more from Dr. Park in the future!
