The dynamics of the American political system

On January 24, the Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies welcomed undergraduate students and Professor Taekyoon Kim from Seoul National University during their group trip to Washington, DC. Dr. Kent Calder, Vice Dean of Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies | SAIS, gave a presentation on the dynamics of the American political system and the highly polarized regional battlegrounds within the country that often sway presidential elections.

The talk was followed by a discussion in which students asked about Hispanic voter turnout given the current conversation on immigration, as well as the unique nature of the electoral college system in a democracy.
