US – JAPAN YEARBOOK

In connection with a course offered through the Japan Studies program at Johns Hopkins SAIS, the Reischauer Center coordinates the publication of a yearbook focusing on U.S.-Japan relations.

Established in 1986, the Reischauer Center’s yearbook on U.S.-Japan relations is believed to be one of the longest, continuously-published surveys on bilateral relations between the two countries. The goal of the yearbook is to reflect on recent events in the United States or Japan that have directly or indirectly had an effect on not only bilateral relations, but also the alliance’s changing impact on both regional and global affairs.

The authors are most frequently graduate students at Johns Hopkins SAIS, who are enrolled in a course during the spring term that shares the yearbook’s name. Working in cooperation with senior advisors at the Reischauer Center, students conduct independent research and interview relevant experts in both the United States and Japan.

After a rigorous academic introduction to their subject in the course and a thorough review process, students’ research papers are edited as chapters of the yearbook. Besides providing participants with an understanding of contemporary U.S.-Japan relations, the objective of this joint initiative between the Reischauer Center and the Japan Studies program at Johns Hopkins SAIS is to create a framework for the maintenance of a constructive bilateral relationship.
