Webinar: Grappling with COVID-19: Policy Lessons from East Asia

Several high-growth East Asian societies, including China, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and Japan, have confronted COVID-19 earlier than Europe and America, after their earlier struggle with SARS and MERS. What can the West learn from this Eastern experience in preparing for and coping with deadly pandemics, as well as the re-opening that must inevitably follow?

This webinar discusses the just-published task-force report of the Johns Hopkins University/SAIS Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies, focusing on East Asian efforts to contain COVID-19, and then re-open their economies and societies. Panelists to discuss the report will include four well-known Asia specialists–all currently teaching at SAIS/Johns Hopkins University:

Ambassador David Shear
Served previously as US Ambassador to Vietnam; US Assistant Secretary of Defense for East Asian and Pacific Affairs; and as Director of China Affairs at the US State Department. MA from SAIS/Johns Hopkins University.

Wonhyuk Lim
Well-known specialist on the Korean economy, who served until recently as Associate Dean of Korea’s prestigious KDI School. Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University, and former CNAPS Fellow at the Brookings Institution.

Professor Jeremy Shiffman
Currently Bloomberg Distinguished Professor at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, with a joint appointment at SAIS. Shiffman works on the politics of health policy-making in low-income countries. He has served on numerous advisory committees working in global health and development, including the World Health Organization and Save the Children. PhD University of Michigan.

Professor Kent Calder
