The Edwin O. Reischauer Center for East Asian Studies operates numerous programs to promote high-quality research on topics related to our mission and to support students within the Japan Studies concentration at Johns Hopkins SAIS.
The most prominent activities at the Reischauer Center are the Visiting Scholars Program and the Reischauer Policy Research Fellows Program. These opportunities bring experienced practitioners and recently-graduated students, respectively, to Washington, DC to conduct research and promote mutual understanding between Northeast Asia and the United States on a person-to-person level.
Given the Reischauer Center’s close connection with the Japan Studies Program at Johns Hopkins SAIS, it also provides opportunities to Japan Studies concentrators through the Summer Internship Program. Students are able to receive financial support for an internship in Tokyo during the summer between their first and second year of the MA program.
In a similar vein, the Reischauer Center has been chosen on a regular basis to participate in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan’s KAKEHASHI Project. This short-term exchange program gives students at Johns Hopkins SAIS with limited prior experience of Japan the chance to learn more about the country’s history, politics, and culture.
